Natural solutions

Through protecting, restoring and reconnecting eastern Australia’s carbon-rich forests and wetlands, the Great Eastern Ranges provides an integrated natural solution to the twin crisis of climate change and biodiversity loss.

There is more carbon in forest ecosystems – in the living and dead biomass of trees and in soils – than there is currently in the atmosphere. The Amazon forest alone stores so much carbon that if it were all released through deforestation, global warming would exceed the 1.5°C threshold, even if we stopped using fossil fuels. By preserving important carbon stores and improving the health of vital ecosystems, more resilient landscapes are created, carbon emissions reduced, and the loss of native animals and plants curbed.
